Summer Under the Stars Day 29: Glenda Farrell

Glenda Farrell takes center stage today as the 29th star to be featured in Summer Under the Stars.
I didn't know anything about Glenda Farrell until I had to look her up for this week's TNT; it looks like she had the most success out of the movies starring her reporter character Torchy Blane. Even though the character is the same through seven of the movies we'll be seeing today, we'll still get a variety in genres; some are crimes, others are comedies, many are suspense. Since our TNT for tonight features the Torchy Blane character, if you're unfamiliar with her as I am we should probably watch one of her earlier movies to acquaint ourselves with her. I find that I can enjoy sequels or sagas much more when I'm familiar with the character, because as the series progresses sometimes they leave smaller details out because the audience is already aware of them. Maybe I'm anal about it, I don't know. lol The day's schedule is shaping up to be quite interesting, so I hope I'm not too busy today.

Daily Cinema Selection: Mystery of the Wax Museum

If you've been a reader of this blog for awhile, then you already know I can't stand many horror movies, which is why my selection for today is probably a little surprising. I chose this one because it was different from the majority of the movies on today's schedule and because I'm still intrigued as to how vintage horror films are different from today's. The most current remake of this film was 2005's critically panned House of Wax, so I kind of want to see if the original was bad as well or if it was simply a poor remake. The original, however, is about a disfigured sculptor who decides to make murder victims into wax statues. Fay Wray stars alongside Glenda Farrell and Lionel Atwill in this 1933 horror flick.

Summer Under the Stars Day 28: Shirley Jones

TCM chose Shirley Jones today as the 28th star to be profiled for this year's Summer Under the Stars.
Well here's a familiar face to a few previous TNT selections; we've had about three Shirley Jones films featured for different TNT nights within the past few months, the most recent of which was last month's The Music Man. That and another previous choice, Carousel, made it onto today's list of movies so that puts us on Previous TNT Alert as well. As I mentioned in the TNT posts, I'm not familiar with Shirley Jones' earlier work. All I know is that she excelled at musicals, that she was the mother on The Partridge Family, then I heard something about her wanting to pose for Playboy later in life. LOL My knowledge is limited. Anyway, from the looks of things, we're in for a day of laughs as most of the movies being shown today are comedies. We had a bit of a serious day yesterday, so this is a welcome break for me. I like some balance between my days--to ask for balance between the movies throughout the day is sometimes asking a bit too much as many actors find their niche and stick with it--so I can deal with a break from the serious to laugh at the silly stuff.

          -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: Elmer Gantry
I chose this movie because the synopsis drew me in. Elmer Gantry stars Jones along with Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons as a jilted girlfriend of a drifter (Lancaster) who begins to find success as a traveling preacher, until the past catches up with him. I initially was going to choose Secret of My Success, but I thought Elmer Gantry might give us more to think about. I thought the plot seemed intriguing and was quite a difference from both the other movies playing today and our previous TNT selections.

Summer Under the Stars Day 21: William Holden

William Holden has the stage today on Day 21 of Summer Under the Stars!
I'm sure you can predict my first sentence by now, so I'm not going to even waste your time by making you read it. We have some diversity on today's schedule, everything from epics to dramas, westerns to comedies, so we've got a healthy mix of a few genres. The only thing I don't see on the schedule is a crime/suspense to round it out. Which is fine; I read the plots for many of the movies on the list for today and they all have some level of intrigue. The way he died is rather sad and hits a little close to home; an old classmate of my mom's from high school recently died in much of the same way. William Holden worked consistently from his beginnings in the industry right up until his death, and contributed to many fine movies over his years as an actor. FYI, did you know he was best friends with former President Ronald Reagan? I didn't either. Let's look at the lineup!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: The Moon is Blue
I was stuck between this one and Miss Grant Takes Richmond. Both of the plots sound absolutely hilarious. The latter stars Lucille Ball against today's star as a secretary who goes to work for a real estate firm without realizing that the entire business is a farce. The movie I ended up choosing pits William Holden and David Niven against each other as romantic rivals for a woman played by Maggie McNamara....the only catch for these two womanizers is that the woman they are fighting to claim has already fiercely claimed something else--her virginity--and intends to stick with it. LOL I can't wait to see how they react upon finding out that the woman they've both fallen for is still a proud V-Card carrying member.

Summer Under the Stars Day 20: Hattie McDaniel

Hattie McDaniel was the star chosen to profile on Day 20 of this year's Summer Under the Stars.
I fully believe that it is about time Hattie McDaniel was given her day in the sun. As the first African-American to win an Oscar, she will always have a special place in the hearts of many a Black filmviewer, myself included. She won an Oscar at a time when many people did not feel it was even okay to be African-American, definitely did not think it was okay for African-Americans to be in film unless it was in a racially degrading manner but her win blew the lid off of that ceiling for so many others in the film industry. Her talent without having to be the star of the movie spoke for itself with that Oscar win. I'll be honest, when I was going through the list of today's movies so I could find one for our Daily Cinema, I was upset that Hattie's characters were never listed in the description, that in fact this day that is supposed to be hers really focuses on other actors and characters. It seemed like her day was really about others and this angered me at first, until I realized that she was so talented that she didn't need to be the center of attention to still steal the show. Check her out in Gone with the Wind. In the brief scenes she had, she still demanded that she be paid attention to, and I listened eagerly. She refused to be ignored on the screen, and I was more than happy not to do so. She had more talents than she was given credit for during her life and I'm really glad TCM has decided to acknowledge her today.

Daily Cinema Selection: The Mad Miss Manton
You see who's in this movie. That's mainly why I even looked at the description. LOL I'll give just about anything a double take if I find out Barbara Stanwyck is involved. I wish she'd been featured this year as well. Anywho, The Mad Miss Manton stars Stanwyck as a dizzy socialite who ends up getting her friends mixed up in a murder investigation. Trouble is, as they choose to try and solve the murder themselves, the murderer is watching. Hattie McDaniel plays Stanwyck's housekeeper with an attitude in this movie. I just wonder how much of her we'll actually get to see. Here's the trailer:

Summer Under the Stars Day 19: Randolph Scott

Randolph Scott is the star du jour for the 19th day of the Summer Under the Stars.
First off, how dapper does he look, right? I had never heard of him or seen him before until I was searching for a photo to use for this post and there were countless others I could have chosen, but I saw this one and knew I'd found the winner. He has that rugged yet extremely handsome look to him, like he'd wear a pair of Wranglers like he's wearing that suit in the photo. With that being said, I'm not surprised at all that the majority of the movies we'll be watching today are Westerns. Needless to say, however, I haven't seen them. LOL

          -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: The Tall T
Can you believe it? There is a movie with Cary Grant on today (My Favorite Wife) and I did not choose it for today's Daily Cinema! I'm not so biased after all. Okay, I'm lying. I was looking at the plotlines for each movie, not the cast, and I liked the concept of The Tall T the most so I chose it. I didn't know Cary Grant was in My Favorite Wife until I was searching for it on Vudu to add it to the links and I recognized his face on the poster. When I saw it, I went to look at the plot for the movie again and considered changing my mind. LOL So I'm still biased, I just wasn't paying attention and honestly, I do like this movie concept better. Most of today's movies are Westerns and this one is no different, but TCM describes this particular film as being about a man who falls in love with a married woman who just happens to be somebody's hostage. How does something develop there? LOL So I have to see it. Here's the trailer:

Summer Under the Stars Day 18: Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood is today's featured star on Day 18 of Summer Under the Stars!

I've seen three or four Natalie Wood movies, and I always found her ability rather refreshing. She had this innocence about her in a few of the movies I watched, and this was especially evident in Splendor in the Grass (spoiler alert: this is coming on today!). I've always been interested in the mystery surrounding her death, because when I had watched a few of her movies and later read about what happened to her, I felt so terrible that we'd lost such a talent so soon. I always end up finding the greats posthumously and end up feeling robbed. I do hope eventually the police are able to solve the case. Anywho, the movies of hers that I have seen are on today's list of flicks, so I know for a fact we've got some goodies on the schedule today.

3:30AM: Inside Daisy Clover

          ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: The Great Race
Keeping it honest, I did not mainly choose this for Natalie Wood. A good portion of the reason I chose this movie was because of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. Some Like It Hot and The Odd Couple are two of my favorite movies, and I'm sure long-time readers are more than familiar with my crush on Tony Curtis. Woof. I've only seen Natalie Wood in serious films and it feels like most of this week we've had serious flicks for our Daily Cinema Selections. I think it's way past time for some comedies. The obvious choices for me would be Splendor in the Grass but I've always found that movie to be so sad (although I still recommend you check it out--Warren Beatty is yet another crush of mine and he looks too good but seriously, it is a good film), or Rebel Without a Cause but that was our very first TNT(!) Aww. So I obviously cannot choose those, and there's West Side Story but I don't know many people who haven't seen that movie at this point so again, I wanted to show something different. This movie is about a villain (obviously Lemmon if you look at the poster LOL) plotting to win an early 20th-century car race that spans 3 continents. Tony Curtis plays Professor Fate's enemy The Great Leslie, and Natalie Wood comes in as a feminist reporter who gets dragged into the mix. I think it's going to be campy but funny. Summer Under the Stars Day 17: Wallace Beery

Wallace Beery was chosen to be the 18th star profiled in this year's Summer Under the Stars.
You already know what I'm going to say. LOL I have no idea who Wallace Beery is; I haven't had the pleasure yet of viewing his films. But today we get to change that with 24 full hours of nothing but his work. I looked him up though, did any of you know he actually got his start in silents and was one of the stars who successfully transitioned to talkies during the '30s? He doesn't seem to be the silent film type to me, so you really do learn something new everyday. As a matter of fact, our first film today, 1920's The Last of the Mohicans, is a silent flick. I had no idea that the current one was a remake, first of all. I find myself in the same position I was in when I found out about Ben-Hur. Had no idea it was a silent, and I wondered how such an epic film could be carried out without dialogue. I wonder the same for Last of the Mohicans. We definitely have an array of films today, from crime to adventure and drama, to even a few comedies. Let's see what these movies are all about?

Daily Cinema Selection: Grand Hotel
It was a little difficult for me to choose a film for today's Cinema because I was equally intrigued with both Grand Hotel and the movie that comes on right after it, Dinner at Eight. I was tempted to go with Dinner at Eight because it was a comedy and we've had so many serious flicks on here lately, but what won me over with Grand Hotel was the cast. This was a huge coup for those times and I love movies that feature multiple big-names sharing screen time. This movie stars Lionel Barrymore as a dying man, Joan Crawford as a stenographer, Greta Garbo as a ballerina and today's featured star, Wallace Beery, as a hardened businessman. Those are some pretty big names. The movie focuses on all of these characters as they are all guests in a posh Berlin hotel, dealing with scandal, heartache, and illness.

Summer Under the Stars Day 16: Ann Blyth

Today belongs to Ann Blyth as the 16th star to be featured in this year's Summer Under the Stars.
I have never seen any of Ann Blyth's movies, but boy was she beautiful. I have absolutely no notes of my own to add as I have never heard of her before right now, but looking at the schedule for today we are definitely in for a heavier day. There are no comedies on the schedule; the lightest we've got is four musicals. The rest are all crimes, dramas and adventures. Her career was not as extensive as many of her counterparts; after a decade and change in film she stuck to just doing guest spots on television shows until she retired from show business in the mid-80s. Let's move on to the lineup!

Daily Cinema Selection: Mildred Pierce
Mildred Pierce stars Ann Blyth as the selfish daughter of Joan Crawford's character, the latter of whom enters the business world in order to secure a place for her daughter. The relationship sours, however, when Blyth's character rebels against her mother's efforts to keep her in control, then they both later find out they are competing for the affections of the same man. I haven't seen a movie quite like this, so I was really interested. I also haven't seen many Joan Crawford movies, so I wanted to see how these two played off of each other. I also want to see which one of them gets the man. LOL

Summer Under the Stars Day 15: Gregory Peck

We're at the halfway mark of Summer Under the Stars now, which brings us to Day 15 and Gregory Peck's turn to be profiled.
Woof. And I mean that in the best way possible. The first time I saw Mr. Peck was in the classic To Kill A Mockingbird when I was in high school. We were reading the book as part of our assignments, and the day after we finished the book we began watching the movie. I was immediately drawn to this very serious, very striking man and for the longest time, I saw him as Atticus Finch because I thought the part was perfect for him and he played it so well. I didn't think he was able to play a bad guy because he did so well with playing the part of justice seeker. He blew my impression out of the water for me earlier this year, however, when we had to watch Duel in the Sun for TNT. Speaking of that, we're on a Previous TNT Alert as Duel will be coming on later today. Interestingly, To Kill a Mockingbird is not on today's list of movies. I am surprised as this is arguably what he is most famous for, but at the same time I get why it wasn't there. Let's focus on some of his other films instead. This promises to be an interesting day of movies and as I'm sure you've guessed it'll be one of the more serious days (there's only one comedy on today's list), but honestly I'm just looking for more excuses to look at him. Sue me.

Daily Cinema Selection: Spellbound
The concept for this movie pulled me in immediately. It didn't hurt that I found out it was an Alfred Hitchcock film. Peck stars in this suspense film alongside Ingrid Bergman as a man in therapy with many hangups who has a murder of some kind buried within his subconscious. Bergman plays the therapist in love with Peck's character who tries to help him uncover his problems and get to a solution. I wonder, is this a murder he witnessed or committed that is buried in the subconscious? Is he a villain and a murderer, or just at the wrong place at the wrong time and saw the wrong thing? If he did do it, was there reason? This reminds me a bit of the Harley Quinn/Joker connection if you're familiar with that story. If you're not, I'll give you a brief synopsis. Harley Quinn was a promising therapist at Gotham's hospital until she got The Joker as a client. She gradually fell in love with him, eventually to the point of obsession, and as her mind completely unraveled she decided to leave regular life entirely to be the Joker's Jester. Spellbound kind of sounds like that.

Summer Under the Stars Day 14: Bette Davis

We're just about halfway through the month, and TCM chose Bette Davis to break us in for Day 14.
I've seen a few Bette Davis movies, and I was never disappointed. Loved her in Death on the Nile and I thought she was amazing in The Corn is Green. I am a little disappointed, however, that we won't be able to see either of those movies today. Maybe I just need an Agatha Christie fix, I don't know. LOL Anyway, I'd heard the Kim Carnes song "Bette Davis Eyes" when I was a kid and when I finally did see Bette Davis' eyes, I realized why there was a song named after them. I thought she was a wonderful actress and I can't wait to get started on a day full of her films.

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: Jezebel
I chose this because it reminds me a bit of a mix between Gone with the Wind and Duel in the Sun. I also chose it because the other Bette Davis movies I've seen have her as the moral-oriented protagonist, who is focused on doing the right thing, or as an older figure, playing background to the younger main characters. I thought this film would showcase a different kind of character. Jezebel stars Davis as a turbulent Southern belle who has an iron will, but this threatens to hurt everyone around her, more particularly her fiance (Henry Fonda). Obviously, this isn't going to be a "The Corn is Green" styled movie....the name of the film is Jezebel, after all.

Summer Under the Stars Day 13: Mickey Rooney

Mickey Rooney gets his day in the spotlight today as the 13th star to be profiled for Summer Under the Stars!
I have seen a couple of movies that Mickey Rooney was in over the years; I first saw him in National Velvet with Elizabeth Taylor (which I believe will be on later this month when she is profiled), and I saw him in a movie he did a little bit before National Velvet but I forget the name. No, I'm lying. I didn't see National Velvet until I was an adult. The first time I saw Mickey Rooney was when he guest-starred on The Golden Girls as Sophia's fake-mobster boyfriend Rocco. LOL I was so young at the time though that I didn't realize how big of a coup that was for the show. I didn't learn about Mickey Rooney until I was a little older, but I still hadn't had the chance to see any of his movies until a couple of years ago. Let's see what the day has in store for us!

Daily Cinema Selection: Quicksand
I chose this because it keeps in theme with some of the other deceitful Daily Cinema Selections we've had so far, and also because I want to see how a simple mechanic gets dragged into a life of crime. That's a bit drastic. A lonely insurance salesman with a thing for blondes, I can see. A mechanic? I can't quite see how it would work. What exactly does this femme fatale want him to do? Steal, kill her husband, is she even married? This intrigues me quite a bit so that's why it is today's Daily Cinema Selection.

Summer Under the Stars Day 12: Catherine Deneuve

Day 12 of Summer Under the Stars belongs to Catherine Deneuve. It's Day 12 already?
I'm growing rather tired of myself because I find that I'm repeating the first sentence over and over again. Guess this is a time for more learning than I assumed, because yet again I do not know much about Catherine Deneuve other than that she was a big deal during the '60s and has worked consistently in both French and American films since then. It's not hard to see part of the reason why she was so popular; she was gorgeous. Without going into fangirl mode, she has a different sort of face than what was out in the decades before her and I'm sure this added onto her appeal as the face of cinema began to change. I don't know much about the films we'll be seeing today, but I believe I picked a goodie for today's Daily Cinema.

Netflix | Vudu | Amazon

4:15AM: The Hunger

          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: Belle de jour
I chose this because I really liked the concept of the film. Belle de jour stars Deneuve as a housewife who decides that she needs something to do with her afternoons, so she becomes a prostitute. What a way to kill some time while the hubby's at work, huh? LOL I'm intrigued and have so many questions that I hope the film answers. Does this create a change in her? The synopsis describes her initially as being frigid, so does being in such a scantilly-clad environment help free her from that? What makes her choose prostitution of all things to do during the afternoon? Is this simply a way to find something to do, is it a release for boredom in her life, are her and the hubby pressed for cash? Let's see how many of these I can get answered.

Summer Under the Stars Day 11: Henry Fonda

Henry Fonda was the chosen star to kick off Day 11 of TCM's Summer Under the Stars!
I don't know anything about Henry Fonda other than that he was an amazing actor and Jane & Peter Fonda's dad. It feels like I've been saying "I don't know anything but..." doesn't it? I'll probably be saying it again at least 6 more times. LOL I've taken a look at the movies scheduled for today and we've got some really good options of things to watch. It's going to be more of a serious day as there are only two comedies on today's list, but we do have some variety; crimes, westerns, dramas and suspense films fill in the gaps. I read up on him a little bit and it's ironic that the man who grew up as a shy, awkward teenager with little confidence in his acting ability at first became known as one of the greatest actors to grace both the stage and the screen. He was so good without trying that he couldn't even articulate how he prepared himself. That's true talent, folks. With that being said, it excites me to be able to finally see what I keep hearing about.

2:45AM: A Big Hand for the Little Lady
Netflix | Vudu | Amazon

4:30AM: I Met My Love Again
Netflix | Vudu | Amazon

           --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: I Met My Love Again
I chose this simply because I wanted to choose something other than the expected choices. The expected choice would have been Grapes of Wrath, but I wanted to select something that was not often mentioned when talking about Henry Fonda's films. I Met My Love Again is about college sweethearts who have intentions to marry, but these plans are halted when the woman has a sudden change of heart and runs off to marry another man, with tragic repercussions. I liked this concept and I wonder what these 'tragic repercussions' are for the characters involved.

Summer Under the Stars Day 10: Lana Turner

Lana Turner takes center stage on the 10th day of Summer Under the Stars.
Another Saturday of movies I have yet to see, so I'm excited to see what the day has to offer. From the descriptions, we're in for another serious day of film but we've got some classics in here (The Postman Always Rings Twice, Jekyll and Hyde, Imitation of Life) so it's okay. I have yet to see a Lana Turner film other than Julia Misbehaves, but I heard about her talent before I knew who she was so these are gonna be some goodies. She was a beaut, wasn't she? Many of these movies have really intriguing descriptions and I'm yet again having a hard time choosing just one of them for the Daily Cinema.

6AM: They Won't Forget

7:45AM: Rich Man, Poor Girl

8PM: The Bad and the Beautiful

10:15PM: Imitation of Life

12:30AM: Peyton Place

3:30AM: The Three Musketeers
Netflix | Vudu | Amazon

           ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily Cinema Selection: The Postman Always Rings Twice
After remembering how many times I've heard about this movie over the years, it became a no-brainer for me to choose this as the Daily Cinema selection. I also chose it because it reminded me a lot of Double Indemnity, where the only difference was that Phyllis was manipulating the lover too and the point of murdering the husband was for insurance money. I don't know anything about this one other than that lovers plot to kill the woman's husband. But I think Lana Turner probably knocked the role of seductress out of the park, so I want that to take center stage.
