TNT Preview: Young Frankenstein

Hi folks. I apologize for another late entry but for the second time in a month, a relative had a medical emergency yesterday, so I spent the day by the phone. But let's get to our last TNT for the month of September, the 1974 comedy spoof Young Frankenstein.

Originally, the film in our TNT slot was the horror film Panic in Year Zero, but with the recent death of Gene Wilder TCM decided to make this Thursday a tribute to him with a small selection of his films. Young Frankenstein stars Gene Wilder as a young man who inherits a castle from his grandfather, the infamous Dr. Frankenstein. The younger Frankenstein decides to walk in his father and grandfather's footsteps and recreate their work, I'm guessing to varying degrees of success. Marty Feldman co-stars as the sidekick Igor alongside Teri Garr as a dim-witted assistant named Inga. Here's a trailer:

Young Frankenstein doesn't air in our regular TNT time slot; it'll be on at 9:15pm EST so I hope you'll still be able to watch it. TNT Preview: The Magnificent Seven

Hi! This week we'll be watching the 1960 western The Magnificent Seven.

The remake of this film, which stars an ensemble cast of Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, comes out in theatres this Friday, so I thought it was pretty cool that TCM decided to play the original the evening before. The original film stars another ensemble cast that includes Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Robert Vaughn. The original, which is based off of the 1954 samurai film Seven Samurai, is about a group of gunslingers in the Old West who are hired to defend a village from being continually raided by a bandit. This film has since been preserved in the National Film Registry. Here's TCM's video of the trailer; I hope you're able to see it:

TNT Preview: I Married a Witch

Howdy! I hope your weekend went well. This week we'll be watching the 1942 comedy I Married a Witch.

Veronica Lake stars in this film as a 17th century witch named Jennifer who gets burned at the stake for witchcraft. Hungry for revenge, she curses her accuser's family, dooming every male for generations to fall in love with the wrong woman. Her ashes are spread around a tree, where her soul remains trapped for the next couple of centuries. Once freed, Jennifer finds the descendant of her accuser, a man named Wallace (Fredric March), and finds that her curse is still intact. She decides to mix it up a bit and creates a love potion to get Wallace to fall in love with her. As is often the case with these films, hilarity ensues as Jennifer's plan crumbles and she falls in love with Wallace. Here's the trailer:

TNT Preview: Tugboat Mickey & Boat Builders/Treasure Island

Hi! Firstly, I apologize for this post going up late. I've talked about it a couple of times but my laptop's hard drive is failing again so it'll randomly spaz out on me. Now that SUTS is over, I'm back to prepping my posts the day of rather than beforehand (in this case the day after), so I'm back at the mercy of my laptop. Yesterday's spaz session involved it taking 10 minutes to wake up, only for all of my open windows to freeze up and stop responding. The "Page Unresponsive" screen didn't even come up, so I had no way to start over. Since the hard drive is failing, I'd rather keep the programs I use most frequently open so that I don't get kicked off of them when the 'open program' prompt function fails. Because of that, it took so long to get everything to respond and start functioning that the system went back to sleep. lol I duly noted that my laptop was informing me I wouldn't be getting this post up on time and took that as my cue to go to bed. I wasn't able to use the computer too much after that, so I tried to start over today. I think I'm going to pre-prep the TNT posts from here out; my laptop seems to be hanging on by a thread so I won't continue to chance not getting a post finished. 
Now anyway, I'm doing our TNT a bit differently this week. I don't know about you, but because I've spent a lot of time on either SUTS or the year's TNTs, I'm a little burned out on films right now. I'll still watch them lol, but I'm just a smidge over it at the moment. So this entire TNT is optional, but there are a couple of things to choose from. What is in our actual TNT slot are Disney shorts starring Mickey Mouse and the gang. They're cute, fun, and not as long as our regular TNTs. But for those who would like to watch an actual movie, the 1950 Disney adventure film Treasure Island will air after the cartoons.

Jim's friend, a former pirate named Captain Bones, gives Jim a treasure map before dying, leaving Jim to figure it out on his own. TNT Preview: The Lady Eve

I guess TCM picked up on my heartbreak at SUTS ending on Wednesday, so to apologize they gave me my spirit animal for our first TNT after the festival. Barbara Stanwyck stars in this comedy as a con artist named Jean who meets wealthy heir--and her future mark--Charles (Henry Fonda) on an ocean liner. Her father and his partner join her in trying to fleece Charles, but Jean ends up falling for him instead and abandons her plans. Charles' valet, however, doesn't trust Jean and exposes her, forcing Jean to take drastic measures to get Charles back. Here's the trailer:

There definitely hasn't been a shortage of films to watch lately. With that being said, I guess I'll accept TCM's apology; I get a Barbara Stanwyck film out of the deal so I guess I'll forgive them for not making the festival longer. TNT Preview: Scarecrow

Hi! How was your weekend? Our last TNT for a little while is going to be the 1973 drama Scarecrow.

Scarecrow pairs Gene Hackman and Al Pacino as down-on-their-luck losers Max and Lion who meet while hitchhiking and become fast friends. Lion, a former sailor, has a family in Michigan that he'd like to reconnect with, while Max, an ex-con, would just like a fresh start. They decide to travel to Pittsburgh together, where Max intends to open a car wash and Lion ends up becoming his prospective business partner. Their road to Pennsylvania has a couple of unexpected detours and the fledgling friendship is tested during one of them.  Here's a trailer:

TNT Preview: The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three stars Walter Matthau as Lieutenant Zachary Garber, a member of the NYPD who finds himself in an intense situation during what should be a routine tour of the city's subway command center. Four men, who go by the names of Mr. Gray, Mr. Green, Mr. Blue and Mr. Brown (Hector Elizondo, Martin Balsam, Robert Shaw and Earl Hindman, respectively) set up an elaborate plan to board and take control of a subway car and its passengers, then demand ransom in exchange for their lives. Lieutenant Garber and Lieutenant Patrone (Jerry Stiller) have to figure out the criminals' plan in the hour-long window that the criminals provide before they start killing passengers. The title of this film might be familiar to you; a remake of this was released in 2009 and starred Denzel Washington and John Travolta. TNT Preview: Cabaret

Hi! We'll be ending our TNTs for June with another musical, this one the 1972 film Cabaret.

Cabaret takes place in 1930s Berlin and stars Liza Minnelli as American singer Sally Bowles alongside Michael York's Brian Roberts against the political uproar of the Communists and Nazis. The club where Sally works prides itself on being the safe haven from the turmoil going on in the country and advertises itself as being a place where everything is beautiful. Sally and Brian soon realize that even in such a place, some ugly truths of life will eventually follow and they find themselves confronted with a number of those realities. TNT Preview: Latin Lovers

Howdy! This week our TNT is not at our regular time, so we're watching the 1953 romantic musical comedy Latin Lovers.

In this film, Lana Turner stars as Nora Taylor, an heiress feeling conflicted about her romantic lot in life. Despite being in a relationship with a wealthy man, she worries that her own wealth draws men to her for the wrong reasons. When Nora's boyfriend Paul (John Lund) takes a trip to Brazil, Nora decides to fly down after him to surprise him. It is in Brazil that Nora meets a man named Roberto (Ricardo Montalban) who makes her feel even more conflicted. Here's a trailer:

Latin Lovers will air this Thursday at an earlier time of 6pm EST and I couldn't find any links to stream this online, so this is one you'll have to DVR if you're busy or at work during the day. The reason why I chose an earlier film is because we're on a couple of Previous TNT Alerts; the film in our regular TNT slot is West Side Story, which we watched back in April, and the film after that is The Music Man, which was a TNT back on Independence Day a few years ago. If you're up very early in the morning, a former Daily Cinema pick, 1967's Wait Until Dark, will be airing.
So how've you been enjoying this unintentional break from me this month? lol I really wasn't intending to take any kind of break; I kinda just dropped off at the tail end of our rockabilly theme last month and haven't really made any kind of return yet. In a (long) sentence, my life has been kinda shit  the entire year but the level of hectic really kicked up in April and this is the first time that things are starting to slow down since then. Since it would seem that things are calming down for now, I wanted to get things right over on Random Reviews then come back here. 
With SUTS in August, I didn't want to overwork myself trying to do anything insane in July so I might just do another Catch-Up July and finally get all the old posts published. I haven't made up my mind yet. Either way, I'll be back soon, both to the blog and to Twitter during our TNT this week because I haven't live-tweeted a film in a couple of weeks. TNT Preview: Gypsy

Hi everyone. I apologize that this week's post will be lacking my usual enthusiasm but to tell you the truth, I'm just not feeling it today. The senseless murders of Christina Grimmie and all of the innocent partygoers at Pulse over the weekend have me drained and feeling all kinds of ways. So I'm sorry if this post comes off as very low-energy but that's how I'm feeling. We're going to be watching the 1962 musical Gypsy.

This film was based off of the memoir Gypsy: A Memoir by Gypsy Rose Lee, stars Rosalind Russell as Rose Hovick, an overly ambitious stage mother to two daughters. She pushes them into show business as children and markets them as a pair but focuses more on June, the more beautiful of the sisters. Louise (Natalie Wood), the wallflower, is the one who ends up receiving the attention after June rebels and elopes with a young man. The movie explores Louise's tumultuous relationship with Rose as well as her transition from a shy, timid girl to a young woman trying to develop a career for herself. Here's a trailer:

TNT Preview: The King and I

Hi! I don't believe I mentioned it last week, but our TNTs for June are mostly musicals. This week is no different; we'll be watching the 1956 film The King and I.

This film adaptation of the Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein stars Yul Brenner as The King of Siam alongside Deborah Kerr as Anna Leonowens. Anna and her son travel to the country of Siam for Anna's new job position as schoolteacher to the King's children, but she finds her greatest challenge is dealing with the King himself. They clash frequently over a number of things, but Anna continues to hold out hope that eventually they'll be able to see eye to eye. Here's a trailer:

TNT Preview: Show Boat

Hi! Even though this is going up in May, we're already moving into June's TNTs, kicking things off with the 1936 musical Show Boat.

This edition of Show Boat (an update to the 1929 part-talkie film of the same name) stars Irene Dunne and Allan Jones as Magnolia Hawks and Gaylord Ravenal, the two characters at the forefront of the 40 years that elapse throughout the movie. After the two meet and fall in love on Magnolia's family's show boat, they go through a number of ups and downs. A parallel story involving the head actress on the show boat, Julie LaVerne (Helen Morgan), unfolds in Show Boat as her life takes her in a different direction than Magnolia's. Here's a trailer:

TNT Preview: The Abominable Dr. Phibes

Hi! For our last TNT of the month, we're watching another horror flick, this one the 1971 horror The Abominable Dr. Phibes.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes stars Vincent Price as the titular character, a mad doctor who calls on the plagues of ancient Egypt to help him exact revenge on the doctors he feels are responsible for his wife's death during an operation some years prior. Joseph Cotten co-stars as the doctor in charge of the medical team who operated on Dr. Phibes' wife Victoria and Virginia North plays the part of Vulnavia, Dr. Phibes' assistant. Here's a trailer:

TNT Preview: Pit and the Pendulum

Hi! Happy Belated Mother's Day to all of the wonderful, amazeballs mothers out there; I hope your holiday was spent soaking in the love from your kiddos and loved ones. I don't celebrate personally, but I cooked dinner for my mama and my sisters-in-law. It was a good time. But anywho, let's get to our TNT for this week! We're watching the 1961 horror Pit and the Pendulum.

Pit and the Pendulum was originally a short story by Edgar Allen Poe that was later adapted as a screenplay. The movie stars horror legend Vincent Price as the mysterious, potentially murderous Nicholas, the brother-in-law to the main character Francis, played by John Kerr. After Francis' sister Elizabeth dies under mysterious circumstances, he refuses to believe the story Nicholas gives him and makes a visit out to his brother-in-law's castle to investigate. TNT Preview: The Fast and The Furious

Hi! As I warned you last week, we won't be dealing with anything too funny this month, and we're kicking things off with the 1955 noir film The Fast and the Furious. 

Not to be confused with the popular Fast & Furious franchise of films, this movie focuses on the journey of wrongly convicted Frank Webster (John Ireland) as he fights to clear his name. After going on the run, he kidnaps a young woman (Dorothy Malone) and hijacks her car in order to get away. Along the way, the two end up falling in love with each other. Here's a trailer:

TNT Preview: Marriage--Italian-Style

Hi! I hope you had a fab weekend. I'm sorry I didn't get this up in time today; yesterday was insanely busy for me and I didn't wake up in time to get this done at our regular time. I'll get things back on track next week. Let's get to our last TNT for this month, the 1964 film Marriage, Italian-Style.

This classic Italian romantic comedy stars Sophia Loren as a prostitute named Filomena who plays the mistress to Marcello Mastroianni's Domenico, a successful businessman. Their relationship is on/off over the years but when Filomena discovers that Domenico plans to discard her in favor of marrying a younger woman, she pretends to be dying in an effort to force Domenico to marry her. Filomena has a secret of her own that she'd kept from Domenico throughout the years: she'd had three sons, one of whom belongs to Domenico, and their marriage would legitimize them. But to make sure that she keeps some of her cards close to the vest, Filomena refuses to tell Domenico which of the three is his son. Here's a trailer:

TNT Preview: Some Like It Hot

Hi! For the first time in quite some time, I'm going to keep this week's TNT although I have definitely seen it before. We're watching the 1959 comedy Some Like It Hot this week, and I couldn't be more excited.

Some Like It Hot stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as two Chicago musicians who become witnesses to a mob murder and end up on the run. Their desperation to get out of town leads them to an all-women's jazz band, where they impersonate women in order to join the band and travel with them to their next location, Florida. Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), the band's lead singer, becomes the main point of contention between Joe (Curtis) and Jerry (Lemmon), as they both find themselves interested in her. Being disguised as women doesn't stop them from attempting to foil the other's chances with Sugar Kane, and predictably, hilarity ensues. Their past also catches up with them, which also brings on the comedic hi-jinks. Here's a trailer:

I know I'm breaking my own rule not to feature films for TNT that I've already seen before, but I couldn't help it. Some Like It Hot is one of my favorite classic films, and is one of the first movies I watched when I first started getting into black and whites. I don't believe we've had it as a TNT before, although I think I chose it for a Daily Cinema pick during SUTS a couple of years ago. TNT Preview: West Side Story

'Ello! How was your weekend? Sorry this is so late! We're watching a cult favorite this week, the 1961 musical West Side Story.

West Side Story stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer in a twist on the classic Romeo and Juliet story, with gang tensions high as Wood's Maria, sister to the leader of a neighborhood gang, falls in love with a former member of a rival gang, Beymer's Tony. The struggle between the gangs inevitably ends in bloodshed, keeping true to the original source. This Oscar-winning film is directly based off of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, with a few notable changes from the stage rendition. Here's a trailer:

West Side Story will be on this Thursday at our regular TNT time of 8pm EST. I have to confess that this isn't a movie that's ever been on my watch list; I'm not too crazy about most musicals and the plot of this movie has just never appealed to me. But TCM basically said, "Eff yo couch" (massive props to whoever gets that lol) and put it in the primetime slot for Thursday. So I'll give it a go. Is there anyone else who hasn't seen this film yet, or am I living under the rock by myself?
