Daily Cinema Double Feature: Raintree County/Night Watch
For the last day of Summer Under the Stars, I decided to end things on a first: Today we're doing a Double Feature with back-to-back films that are actually the last two films of the festival. Since Elizabeth Taylor's day ends with a documentary of sorts, I thought it would be cool to end things with the last films of the month. Also, I couldn't choose between the two. lol There were actually five potential films for today's Daily Cinema, but my sister and mom helped me narrow it down to two, then my sister suggested doing a Double Feature so I wouldn't have to choose. Done. lol

Raintree County is a Civil War-era drama about a wealthy Southern girl named Susanna who visits the North and has a brief affair with a man (Montgomery Clift), which distracts him from his true love (Eva Marie Saint). After faking a pregnancy to trick him into marrying her, the two move South but realize that it cannot work as John is an abolitionist, so they move back North. Susanna's parents and a family slave have all perished in a fire, and Susanna discovers that the family slave may have been her actual mother. Following that discovery, she begins to go mad. 

Night Watch intrigued me a bit more, but in a different way. In this film, Elizabeth Taylor takes on the role of Ellen, a woman recovering from a mental breakdown who thinks she witnessed a murder but due to her mental history, nobody believes her. She notices more things that would point to there having been a murder, but everyone dismisses them as PTSD episodes due to her past trauma or mere coincidences that ultimately lead nowhere. Having my own struggles with mental illness is what made this film jump out at me, so I'd like to see how it all plays out.  Hmm. Sounds like I've ended the festival on a note of mental illness, huh? lol That wasn't the intention, these two plots genuinely interest me, but I didn't realize until I was typing out the summaries that both of them deal with mental health. I was more focused on the fact that Susanna's mental break was triggered by the revelation that she may be part Black than the fact that she had a mental break, which I know sounds weird but welcome to my brain, I guess. Daily Cinema: The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)

George Sanders co-stars in this film as the ball who gets this film rolling, the pleasure-loving Lord Henry. Lord Henry meets Dorian, a young, handsome but gullible young man, while the latter is having his portrait painted and convinces Dorian that his age and looks are all he needs in life despite Dorian's intelligence. Fully on board, Dorian expresses his desire that his portrait could show the ravages of age rather than him, but makes that wish around an ancient Egyptian relic, which grants him the desire. After the woman he loves commits suicide, Dorian throws himself into the pleasure-loving life of debauchery Lord Henry talked so fondly of and as the years pass, the portrait eventually changes so much that even Dorian cannot recognize himself in it any longer. Even as a middle-aged man, his outer appearance is frozen in time, while the portrait reflects the ugliness inside of him. There are never too many silent films on my Daily Cinema lists, mainly because there aren't many to choose from, but today had a few silent films on it so I wanted to make sure I chose a good one. Wiki has no description of the film, so I had to go by TCM's synopsis instead, which was that a young woman named Patricia (Davies) falls in love with her older sister's fiance, but he pays her no mind. At some point later, she discovers that her sister is cheating on him. The movie is described as a comedy, but to be honest I was hoping for a more dramatic take on the plot. So sometimes I want a little despair in my silents. Don't judge me. lol

Daily Cinema: Strawberry Blonde (1941)

Strawberry Blonde stars James Cagney as a man who falls in love with a gold-digging society girl but loses the opportunity to court her to his best friend. He remains enamored by her, even after marrying another woman. I'm more familiar with James Cagney in gangster roles, so I thought this was a good choice to go with so I could see him doing something different. I also don't think I've seen too many Rita Hayworth movies, if I've seen any at all, so I was intrigued. This was a day in which I had trouble narrowing down the film I wanted to feature, so if Strawberry Blonde isn't for you (or you've already seen it), check out Jimmy the Gent or The Roaring Twenties, because it was between those two and Strawberry Blonde that I was choosing from.

The minute I saw the synopsis for this film, I knew I had to feature it. In this movie, Sir Laurence Olivier plays alcoholic schoolteacher Graham and Simone Signoret plays his disdainful wife Anna. A new student enrolls at Graham's school and develops a crush on him, but when she attempts to make a pass at him he rebuffs her. She threatens to tell his supervisors that he molested her, throwing his life into disarray. 

Simone Signoret co-stars in Diabolique as long-suffering mistress Nicole, who is a teacher carrying on an affair with the headmaster of her school, cruel Michel. Michel's wife Christina is the owner of the school and a fellow teacher, but is fully aware of the affair; Michel's abusive treatment of them both has allowed them to bond with each other over their growing hatred of him. At her wit's end, Nicole comes up with the idea to kill Michel. Christina takes some convincing but eventually agrees to go along with it, but after the deed is done things start to go wrong.

Umm....so I'm sorry. Again. I told you she was going to be all over this year's festival! I was originally choose the first film in the lineup, Kisses for Breakfast, but because I already chose the last film in yesterday's lineup (which should be airing just after I post this at midnight) I didn't want to have a back-to-back, so I tried to spread it out a bit. Christmas in Connecticut stars Barbara Stanwyck as a homemaking columnist who entertains her audience with her recipes, child-rearing advice and general tips for the home, but in reality, she is a single woman with no children who has no idea about how to run a home. Those bluffing skills of hers are put to the test when a war hero named Jefferson (Morgan) returns home and requests to spend Christmas in Connecticut with the homemaker whose articles got him through a tough time in the war hospital.  You already know the tags; #MorganTCM and #SUTS for the larger conversation and #atvdailycinema if you watch either my original pick of Kisses for Breakfast or Christmas in Connecticut. Remember? is a comedy starring Greer Garson in one of her earlier roles as a woman named Linda preparing to marry a man named Sky. His best friend Jeff falls in love with her at first sight and basically steals her away from Sky. Fast forward a few months, and the two, once in love, eventually divorce. Sky comes up with a plan of his own, to drug the two with an amnesiac drug that had recently been made, in an effort to help them start over.

So....if you took a good look at this poster then you probably saw the second name in the cast. Sorry. lol Anyway, the brief synopsis for this film on TCM's website was a little misleading; from what I read on Wiki Glenn Ford stars as a former military officer with plans to sell his land and start over again with his fiancee, but the tactics of the prospective buyer, a nearby ranch, are questionable at very least and he starts to question his decision. Barbara Stanwyck co-stars as the ranch owner's wife, who's having an affair with her brother-in-law. The agreement devolves into a battle for the land, and the ranch owner's innocent daughter comes to understand a lot about the dysfunction in her family as a result. 
The Violent Men is just after our primetime film so it should be easier to catch than some of the other films I've featured. Because this movie is Pre-Code, there isn't a ton of information available on it but from the bits and pieces I got on it, rising politician John Shadwell (John Boles) marries a woman named Laura, known for being a society social climber, but his true love is the titular Vergie Winters (Harding). Their love affair first begins before his marriage, but it carries on for 20 years after they reconnect following his honeymoon. They have a child, who John adopts and raises while Vergie attempts to remain out of the spotlight as the revelation of a mistress would destroy John's life. His wife grows suspicious, however, and resolves to get to the bottom of things.

In Name Only stars Cary Grant as a wealthy man named Alec trapped in an unhappy marriage to a manipulative woman (Francis) but later falls for a widow he meets named Julie (Lombard). Alec's wife Maida is cold, cunning and only concerned with rising her social status, on his dime of course. When Alec meets Julie he realizes more than ever that he made a mistake marrying Maida but when he tries to start the divorce proceedings, Maida refuses to grant (ha) his wishes and sign the papers.  Aren't you proud of me? I haven't had to cross out a 'my husband' mention in this post yet! I've been a good girl. lol On a serious note, I have to admit being a little sad that a couple of movies I was expecting to see on today's lineup weren't there. I've been trying to watch Operation Petticoat again for years and TCM used to play it on military-related holidays like Memorial or Veteran's Day because it's a war comedy, but they've stopped and I haven't seen the film on a lineup in a couple of years. I was also hoping to see The Awful Truth on here; while the remake of this film is on the lineup this month, the original is not. I've seen a ton of my hus---err, Cary Grant's films, but I'm pleased to see some in the lineup that I actually haven't seen yet. My body is ready. I'm ready. I meant I'm ready. Oh well.
