Summer Under the Stars Day 8: Ramon Novarro

The second week of Summer Under the Stars kicks off with a day dedicated to the work of Ramon Novarro.
Whether you're a silent flick aficionado or a silent skeptic, today is a good day for either side. If you're skeptical that silent films can be enjoyable, you have today to test that theory as six of today's movies are silents, tonight's TNT selection included. If you love silents then again, today is a great day to tune in. Also, if you were watching a few days ago when Charlton Heston was profiled, then you saw the remake of Ben-Hur and you'll be watching the original tonight, so like I said this would be a good day to compare the two versions of the film. It's a good basis to go on too--one is silent, one has dialogue. They were made 30 years apart, so I think we can keep our eyes open to any changes.

Daily Cinema Selection: The Red Lily
I chose this movie because it was different from the majority of the silent flicks I've seen, which were comedies. Since we'll already be watching a more serious, epic-themed movie later with Ben-Hur, I wanted to see how a romantic film with no dialogue would play out. The Red Lily focuses on two lovers who are separated, then thrown into the pits of society. Normally when we see films like this there's dialogue for us to follow, so I think this would be a good film to watch so that we can really see the range of talent shown without any words. I couldn't find a good trailer for this one, so I'm sorry.
