Summer Under the Stars 2017 Preview
Hi!! Long time no see! I know it's been awhile. ATV's never been far from my mind, but to be truthful I'm still not at a place where I can see blogging full-time about vintage again. However, you didn't really think I was going to miss SUTS, now did you? I may have gone dark on everything else for the time being, but there are three times in the year I refuse to miss: February because of Black History Spotlight, August for SUTS and the blog's anniversary, and October for Octoberfest. I can take or leave the other nine months, to be honest. Even if I had to scrap the other two, SUTS is non-negotiable. Until my tastes shift so much that I don't enjoy classic movies anymore, I'm gonna be here every single August, even if you don't hear from me before it starts or after its over. lol But with that out of the way, let's take a look at this year's SUTS honorees. Per usual, I got early access to the lineup from the helpful posters over at TCM's forums.

2. Ray Milland
3. Lon Chaney Sr.
4. Claire Trevor
5. Gene Kelly
6. Robert Mitchum
7. Eleanor Parker
8. Franchot Tone

*Mandy's Note: So excited to see my queen.... my spirit animal.... my demi-goddess Barbara Stanwyck on this year's list. Woop!
14. Vanessa Redgrave
15. Ricardo Montalban
*Mandy's Note: There was a shirtless picture of Ricardo Montalban in the search results and I very nearly put that one up instead because...woof. In a good way. But I'm good at pretending to be a classy broad, so I put up the more polished image instead. In my mind though, I used the shirtless pic. LOL
16. Elvis Presley
17. Rosalind Russell
18. Rod Taylor
19. Angela Lansbury
20. Cary Grant
*Mandy's Note: OMGOMG woof. Welcome back to SUTS, husband, sir. lol

Despite my hiatus from vintage I'm pumped for this year's festival, mainly because the gods smiled on me and put both my spirit animal and play husband in the same lineup again. I was a little disappointed not to see either Bette Davis or Joan Crawford in the lineup this year; I thought it would be a perfect time to profile them both with Feud having ended back in April. There's a whole new gang of fans now and it would have been awesome to see what they thought of the originals and their bodies of work, one of the major sources of contention between the two on the show.
I was also a bit disappointed at the lack of diversity in the lineup, which is a longtime issue but it's one that isn't really anyone's fault. It's common knowledge that minorities weren't given starring roles for quite some time (which would be why days like Hattie McDaniel's a few years ago were more about other people's movies than they were her own; she was a co-star rather than a lead), so it wouldn't exactly be their day if TCM were to feature them. I don't think the lineup is done in a way that is exclusionary on purpose, it just highlights the truth of Hollywood during the time periods being featured on the channel. It can't be helped, so if you're a minority film buff like myself, you already know that it's something that just has to be accepted.
Anyway, were there any entrants you were excited to see this year? Any names that were new to you? I've been dying to post this year's lineup. I actually found out about it back in May but I didn't want to post it too early, so I waited. I also wanted that time to be able to go through the lineup and pick new Daily Cinemas for each day. Now that there are 4 years of both SUTS and TNT archives for me to go through, it's gotten harder for me to remember all of the picks, and last year I kept selecting films that had already been featured. So I wanted the extra time to make sure I was choosing films that hadn't been featured yet. That's actually why there haven't been any TNTs for 2017 yet; I keep coming across repeats. I figured while I was on hiatus, TNT could go on it as well so that maybe there'd be a few newer films added to the lineup by the time I came back. We'll see how things are going after the festival is over.
I hope you enjoyed this year's preview and I'll see you next month!
