Black History Spotlight

Hi! I've mentioned this before, but there's one more thing on the list of things I wanted to do during my blogger timeout some time ago. I got to do another SUTS and was able to do Octoberfest. The last thing I wanted to be able to do was something to celebrate Black History Month. So I present Black History Spotlight, a month-long celebration of African-American history and the people who have added to it. The basic point of what I'm doing isn't much different from what other sites are doing around this time of year, but I wanted my take on it to be a little different.

I didn't learn much about Black History in school, so I do have to admit that it was always a little frustrating growing up Black but not having much knowledge about my roots. We were told about the basics, slavery and the Civil Rights movement of the '60s, but that was about it. Usually, I was the only Black kid in class, so when any notable figure was mentioned, I had an entire class looking at me as though I knew them personally. LOL It was usually a bit embarrassing, but I remember being and feeling proud in those moments as well. What bothered me was that other than those same figures and the same bits of information we were always told, I didn't know any more than my classmates about Black history and was never very sure of where to start learning on my own. Now that I have a platform to talk about Black History, I'd like to do that. Last year I knew I wanted to talk about it but didn't really have a structure or even a plan, I just knew I wanted to take part in or create a discussion about BH. This year, I decided to do the Black History Spotlight.

So what is it exactly? Every day, much like with SUTS in August, we'll have a Spotlight on a person pivotal to Black history in some form. Each day of the week has a different category, so every Monday throughout the month you'll hear about people who've done something for the medical field, as an example, and so on with the other days of the week. The goal is to expose ourselves to more than just the familiar faces of Black history, in more areas than the ones synonymous with Black history today. Now as I say with every project I take on, if you're more educated on the subject than I (which is quite likely lol), then I apologize if this doesn't result in a ton of new information for you. But if you, like myself, are not well-versed in other areas of Black history, then I hope you enjoy this month's posts. If BH as a whole isn't something you'd like to study, no harm no foul, come back next month. But if you're interested in learning a bit more about it with me (and I really hope you are), please come back tomorrow and every other day throughout the month of February for Black History Spotlight!
