This week is the first of the repeat movies I was telling you about last week; starting with 1932's Grand Hotel. If you were following last August's SUTS promotion, then you already saw this movie during Wallace Beery's day to be featured. If you didn't, here's your chance. January's TCM Star, Joan Crawford, is also in this flick.
Grand Hotel boasts an ensemble cast of Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, Greta Garbo, and both John and Lionel Barrymore, all of whom are guests at the same hotel. They each have their own story, which I am guessing we'll find out as the movie progresses. I haven't read any of the spoilers nor have I seen the movie (it's one of the many that are still on my DVR from August) so I didn't want to look up too much; all I read was that Crawford plays a career-oriented stenographer, Beery a serious businessman, Lionel Barrymore a dying man, and Garbo a ballerina with a case of Team Solo syndrome, aka the lonelies. Here's the trailer:
Next is another movie from 1932, this one being the drama flick Rain.
This film stars Crawford as a prostitute who goes up against, in TCM's words, 'a fire-and-brimstone preacher,' played by Walter Huston. I didn't want to read too much on it, but Crawford & Huston's characters are two of a few passengers stranded on a boat on a South Pacific island due to the possibility of cholera. The film follows these characters as they are forced to remain in each other's company for the duration of their isolation from everyone else. Back in 1932, this was considered a flop but let's see how it goes over today. I can't find a trailer, but here's a clip:
Grand Hotel airs at 8pm EST, and Rain comes on afterward at 10pm EST this Thursday on TCM.
