Smilin' Through is a dramatic romance about how love and rivalry can stretch decades and generations. In this historical romance, Jeanette MacDonald does double duty as both Moonyean, the person at the center of this love rivalry between two families, and her niece Kathleen, who grows up to be a doppelganger of her aunt. Moonyean's death, at the hands of a spurned suitor who meant to kill John, results in him becoming the guardian to Moonyean's sister and brother-in-law's young daughter after the two are killed. As Kathleen grows up, she becomes enamored with someone from the same family as the man who once courted, then accidentally killed, her aunt. Understandably, her uncle is devastated and tries to do what he can to keep history from repeating itself.
