From the Etsy Files...
Hi! As we continue our exploration into rockabilly and its subcultures, we take it to Etsy this week to see what we can find. I'm not entirely sure what to expect; when I'm on Etsy it's usually to find vintage resellers or specific vintage items. I don't go there too often for current things, so I wonder how much success I'll have. I don't have any worries with finding rockabilly items; my concern is finding sub items. I guess I'll just see how everything pans out. Off to Etsy!
Cat Eye Sun Glasses with Bats & Black Pearls Available with many different colour pearls or rhinestones on request. Size: 15cm (across at top) x 4.8cm at widest point (centre of frames). Emeraldangel Original Design Delivery - This item is made to order, normally despatched within 5 working days, but during very busy periods can take up to 10 days to be despatched.
I think this could fall into a couple of rockabilly's subcultures, gothabilly and psychobilly I believe, because those genres employ darker themes. I also included them because 1-if this isn't your first visit here, you know my obsession with cat eye sunglasses, and 2-they're just badass sunglasses. I like that you can customize these glasses with the rhinestone/pearl detail of your choosing when you place an order; I don't see that too much but admittedly, I also don't see too many offers for custom sunglasses. These are sweet shades, in my opinion. I want 'em in my life.
Monster Rockabilly/ Psychobilly Peplum Top. This lil top is made of this really cute horror / monsters print fabric. Its 100% cotton and inside is fully lined. It comes with adjustable straps and has a zipper at the back. You can wear it as a regular halter or crossed halter.
This top would be either horrorbilly, which mainly focuses on the love of horror in general, or psychobilly, which as I mentioned earlier, is known for anything darker, including horror films. I think it'd be super cute for Halloween parties, but if I was a bolder person I'd probably wear it whenever I felt like it rather than relegating it to a particular season. I guess I think that less people would look at me crazy for wearing the top if it was season-appropriate. But if I had to pick a crowd that this would be for, I'd go with horrorbilly.
Gorgeous Cupcake Dress Rockabilly Dress Birthday Dress Pin Up Dress 50s Retro Dress Psychobilly Goth Lolita Steampunk Swing Party Plus Size Clothing. Superb quality at an unbeatable price, this gorgeous fifties style dress is just perfect for parties, weddings and proms. Crafted from light cotton featuring a pretty print, making it versatile enough to style to your very own taste.
Even though this is a psychobilly-advertised dress, I'd put it as a mix between that and regular rockabilly. I like that this is a darker color alongside the cute cupcake print, and I like the two were combined in a swing dress rather than another type of structure. Cupcakes and cute details are used in rockabilly, but I've also seen it a bit with psychobilly and even in a few gothabilly dresses. For me, though, this is on the line of rock/psychobilly.
Discounted-Was $55 Now $45 Black "Atomic Cafe" embroidered lounge style shirt. This one a perfect for the vintage lover, rockabilly guy or just anyone who appreciates atomic style from the 1950's. (This is the one and only I will have of this shirt, every other design will be a drive-in, not cafe.)These are 2the9s Retro Original designs from our 2/9 Kustoms Collection to be found only with us.
As I mentioned during the Pinterest Files last week, bowling shirts are a big part of rockabilly fashion for men. This particular one is a lounge-style shirt, but it's one of a kind, something I like about this shop. I like that there's an authenticity of vintage with the design, yet the designs are new. I've never really considered bowling and lounge shirts, especially for men, to be particularly fashionable but somehow the rockabilly fashion and its additions make it work. Now I want one. lol
Beige Tattoo Art Dress Comfortable and definitely a looker, perfect for a summer day on the town or a show. This dress has amazing style .
This dress would be more psychobilly, but I included it because I really liked the vintage tattoo style that was used for the print. It's a bit more psychobilly than rockabilly to me because from what I have seen, rockabilly prints and designs are a bit more basic. Tattoos themselves are an 'alternative' detail, so I'd figure a dress with tattoo print or detailing would be classified as an 'alt' of rockabilly. How would you classify this?
Victorian "The Ouija" Silver-Tone Ouija Board Ring~ This is a silver-tone colored ouija board ring. The ouija board measures about 3/4 inches by 1/4 inches. The ring base is silver-tone filigree and quite ornate. The ring is unisex and adjustable-making it an excellent present.
This ring, for me, is more gothabilly than anything else. I suppose it could be a horrorbilly accessory but it seems more goth to me, mainly because I find ouija boards pretty morbid. Cool, but morbid. lol Things related to death and the supernatural are a big thing for gothabilly followers so for me, I would consider this to be more gothabilly rather than psycho/horrorbilly. But classifications aside, this is a pretty badass ring. As I'm sure I've mentioned, I really like unique accessories that may look kitschy to those with a more streamlined or simple style. I'm not personally into ouija boards; I'm a bit too superstitious (and scared LOL) to deal with them, but I love the look of them.
Original Vintage 1990 The Cramps Stay Sick Shirt Tag Size: Extra Large Material: 100% Cotton Pit to Pit: 20.5 inches Collar to Hem: 31 inches This shirt is in excellent condition, no holes or stains
The Cramps are largely the inspiration behind the creation of psychobilly, something I'll touch more on during this month's Spotlight. Since more of the focus for this post is on the subcultures that rockabilly has created, I figured a shirt from one of the sources integral to the creation of one of those things would be relevant.
This beautiful lace choker necklace has a black obsidian drop, gothic skeleton pendant, gold Czech glass beads, metal chain, black czech glass beads and rhinestone accents. 12" long can be adjusted to 17". Lobster clasp.
This necklace is firmly a gothabilly product in my opinion. The macabre, death-inspired and vintage style of gothabilly seem to have combined in this gothic obsidian choker with a skeleton detail. This reminds me a bit of a Victorian-era choker with the way that its designed. This might be a custom design, but I'm not entirely sure. Either way, gothabilly seems to be about a vintage take on goth and its themes, so this necklace is fitting for the fashion.

This is another rockabilly shirt for men, this one a mix of Western and print, another important element of male rockabilly fashion. When I first saw that Western/cowboy print was a part of men's rockabilly, I was a bit surprised until I remembered that rockabilly is about more than just fashion. Country is also a part of rockabilly music, so that's probably where some of the fashion inspiration comes from as well. The rockabilly spin on Western-inspired fashion would present itself in the detailing on the shoulders, which I like. It's a bit more subtle of a nod to rockabilly's musical roots. At least that's my take on it. This particular shirt, because of the print, would be for a more psychobilly-friendly dude, but the Western-inspired fashion in general has its roots in rockabilly.
Originally, my intention here was to break down the elements of the subcultures in a similar way to how I did it for the Pinterest Files last week, but it ended up being more of a regular Files post instead. Because the subculture fashions are a bit harder for a beginner like me to find, I figured I'd feature these now and break down the elements of each type of "billy" during our Spotlight. As always, I hope you enjoyed this post and I'll see you soon!
