ATV Octoberfest 13: Vintage Halloween Media: Music, Movies & Stories

Hi! Today is a 2-in-1; I initially had this broken into two entries but with things winding down, I wanted to squeeze a couple of other things in first. Don't worry, I won't be posting any Octoberfests come November; we'll be completely caught up by then. But today, I wanted to do a series of playlists for Halloween. If you're having a Halloween party (or just like Halloween music) I wanted to put some music playlists on here, then go on to spooky stories you can read to the kiddos, and end things with black and white horror flicks you can find online. So I guess this is in the same vein as a Link Bomb! but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. It's still going to be a pretty small post; Let's get started!

Music

I know this is about to make you question my intelligence (you know, going on the theory that you've never questioned it before lol) but I never thought about Halloween music. Sound effects, sure. But specific Halloween music never crossed my mind. My knowledge of Halloween music is limited to 3 songs--I've Put a Spell on You from Hocus Pocus, Monster Mash, and of course, Thriller, which to me is the quintessential Halloween song. It's also my favorite song of all time, but that's beside the point. Here are some Halloween playlists you can listen to:

Stories

Initially, I was going to make the spooky stories their own post, but it felt a little underwhelming to me by itself so I combined it with the movies and music. I know it looks like there aren't many on here, but many of these links are for compilations, so there are quite a few per page.

The Lady in the Veil--S. E. Schlosser
Shadow in the Wilderness--Halloween Web submission
Messages from Dead Girlfriend--Reddit
Bleeding Sink--S. E. Schlosser
The Boy on the Stairs--Jezebel user MsAmy
The Cemetery Mimic--Halloween Web submission
Real Michigan Ghost Stories--Your Ghost Stories
10 Spooky Ghost Stories--Jezebel
Scary Story Collection 2--Halloween Web
Texts from an Ex...--Reddit
Scary Ghost Story Collection--Jezebel

Movies

I tried to keep this list at movies that you can easily watch online. I don't know the safety levels of the sites that have movies that you can download, so I just stuck with the movies you can stream, which is why the list isn't as long as I'd like. I'm trying to give you something fun to do on Saturday, not give you a virus because I recommended a movie. LOL There are tons of movie playlists on YouTube, but some of the movies on the lists have since been removed for copyright, so I wanted to put something together with movies that were still on the site. I've split the movies into two categories--one for sci-fi and horror, and the other for film noir/mysteries and thrillers. I hope you like them!

Sci-Fi and Horror

 1. Dracula (1931)                                                                 Archive
 2. Horror Hotel/City of the Dead (1960)                             YouTube | Archive

 6. The Ghost Train (1941)                                                    YouTube | Archive
 7. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)                           YouTube
 8. Night of the Living Dead (1968)                                      YouTube | Archive
 9. Nosferatu (1922)                                                               YouTubeArchive
10. Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972)                                  YouTube
11. The Vampire Bat (1933)                                                  YouTube | Archive
12. My World Dies Screaming (1958)                                   YouTube
13. Eyes Without a Face (1960)                                             YouTube
14. The Innocents (1961)                                                        YouTube
15. Curse of the Cat People (1944)                                         Archive

There's a larger library of horror flicks on Black and White Movies if you'd prefer something other than the movies I've included in this playlist. YouTube user Bo Black has an awesome Old Horror Movies playlist that I'd recommend a look through if you want a more extensive list that auto-plays.

Mysteries, Thrillers & Film Noir

 1. Shed No Tears (1948)                                                         YouTube | Archive
 2. Sabotage (1936)                                                                  YouTube | Archive
 3. The Amazing Mr. X (1948)                                                YouTube | Archive
 4. The Dark Mirror (1946)                                                      YouTube
 5. Blonde Ice (1948)                                                                YouTube | Archive
 6. Notorious (1946)                                                                  YouTube

 8. Case of the Frightened Lady (1940)                                     YouTube | Archive
 9. The File on Thelma Jordon (1950)                                        Archive
10. Shock (1946)                                                                        YouTube | Archive
11. The Dark Hour (1936)                                                         YouTube
12. Quicksand (1950)                                                                 YouTube

Random note but 1946 was quite a popular year for movies, wasn't it? LOL If you want a more thorough playlist, YouTube user tdebbie2002mm has a Mystery Murder Suspense playlist with movies from 1940 to 1949 that you can look through. Open Culture has a list of 60 free film noir films, most of which can be found at the Black and White Movies website.

That does it for me today. I hope that you liked the playlists and if, like me, you probably won't be doing anything for Halloween, you've found something in today's post to keep you company on Saturday. There will be a couple more Halloween-geared posts coming before the month is out, so keep an eye out for those. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you soon!
