When I was younger, I used to think that the swimsuits in the photo above were too conservative. I'd say things like, "It looks more like a slip, not a bathing suit! I don't want to swim in that!" and wrinkle my nose, but I didn't really appreciate a vintage bathing suit back then. Maybe it's more covered than today's swimwear, but look at how it captures the feminine silhouette! And that's the thing--it's not showing everything. Goes right along with the all-too-familiar motto of letting some things remain a mystery. No reason to show the milk and cookies if you don't intend on letting someone snack, know what I mean?
I think the second from the left and the last on the right are my favorites in this photo. I love the x-shaped shirts and bathing suit tops, and they also give me double confirmation that my boobage won't slip out. LOL Love the smiles on their faces, just looks like a happy and carefree pic to me.
Some sistas! LOL I've noticed that many vintage photographs have women posing like this, and it's still emulated on red carpets and in photos today. I think it's a great way to display the gams, and all of these women have nice ones, and a way to show off the body without bending over and being overtly sexy, which these ladies have perfected as well. Love it.
One thing I have noticed and love is that in many of these swimsuit photos, the allure and sexiness of vintage ladies is combined with happiness. They look happy to be modeling the swimwear, happy to be on the beach, and they could be totally faking it but they've got me fooled. I'd want a swimsuit so I could look that happy too, which I'm sure was their point. Advertising at its best. LOL I also like that for many photos, there's actually a beach behind them. A lot of today's clothing shoots are on a set and you can tell there's no beach behind them. Even in the vintage ones that are on a set though, it just looks like more fun. Maybe I'm biased. I probably am.
Matching swimwear! Today you're considered a cornball for matching your suit to your hubby's, so I guess I'm a cornball then because I actually find this to be cute.
I love how she is just lounging and looking too cute while doing so. It gives me that lazy, relaxed vibe that I usually associate with summer and the pool or beach. I kinda dig the sunglasses too.
I had to include this one because I thought it was hilarious. See the military guy saluting her? LOL! And the look on her face says that she knows they're looking, too. It's a really cheeky photo. No pun intended. Well, since the back of her bathing suit is up and they're positioned to be in perfect view of it, maybe the pun should be intended after all. lol
Finally, I had to include this photo of Marilyn Monroe because I have always admired her beauty and her energy in both her movies and pictures. There was a carefreeness, a light, that really came out in these pictures and it was hard for me to choose just one because I liked all of the ones I came across. But this one seemed to go with what I wanted to put in this post the most, a cute bathing suit combined with an easygoing, fun and relaxed vibe.

I love this picture for multiple reasons. Firstly, they're actually at the beach. Secondly, there's a rainbow of swimsuit colors across the board. Thirdly, I think the photo shows how much variety there was in vintage bathing suits and fourth, it looks like a fun photo. Now this could be a vintage repro painting, but either way I think it captures what I was looking for in the photos I selected.
I love this photo. Like I said earlier, I like bikinis and two pieces, but I fear feeling like I'll be overexposed and I don't want to be uncomfortable and tugging at my suit all day or wasting the suit completely by wearing a full cover-up. These two pieces are stylish, still gives me a shape (I'm very petite so that's another concern of mine), look comfortable and don't leave the milk and cookies out for show. Win.
I think I'm going to have to look up more of Jantzen's print ads because I've loved each one that I've seen so far. In most of their photos, they have a woman and man and the idea is to show that the bathing suits are attractive and appealing and will have all the men chasin' ya. I like the concept and I like how all of these paintings show the same playfulness, the point being that the swimsuits are going to make you more alluring to men without being completely obvious.
I think this was just a normal photo of three ladies on the beach, but I like it. I like the different prints on the bathing suits and I really want one like it. I think my favorite is the last on the right, the lady in front of the green surfboard. I also like how despite the swimwear and the obvious fact that they'll be going in the water, their hair is still styled to perfection and not just left alone as to not muss up anything. These ladies were glam in and out of the water.I love how she is just lounging and looking too cute while doing so. It gives me that lazy, relaxed vibe that I usually associate with summer and the pool or beach. I kinda dig the sunglasses too.

After looking at some of these pictures, I now have a much better idea of what I'm looking for in a new bathing suit. I also can say with confidence that I was completely wrong when I was younger in saying that all vintage suits were too covered. Maybe the ones in the '20s and '30s were, but the ones I included are gorgeous (to me) and I can see myself being more comfy in those than in the panty and bra-like bikinis of today. Hope you found some inspiration for some new swimwear or are more excited for that vacation this summer!
