I know the outfit I'm about to show you isn't the most interesting, isn't the most colorful of palettes and isn't going to be the most memorable of my Vintage Ensembles, but I saw these oxford heels and had to put together an outfit with them. I like oxfords, whether they're flats or heels and the color doesn't even matter. When I saw this I thought it would make a really cute casual outfit for taking a day to wander the city. Maybe check out the library, hit up a museum, something artsy and low-key.
Author Outings Dress, $79.99 |
This goldenrod dress is simple epitomized. No fussy print, no pleating or other texture accessorizing, not even belt loops. lol Very simple, about knee-length dress with a simple white liner around the collar and at the bottom hem. I wasn't really a fan of mustard when I first fell in love with fashion and have since grown to love seasonal color palettes, so this is a new adoration for this typically autumn shade. I love this color for drab fall and wintery days. There's something boring about this dress, but its a good something. Can't readily identify what the 'something' is lol, but its very understated and I like it.
Noir We're Talking Tights, $13.99 |
With that dress, I'd use the tights as a way to punch up the look a little bit. With such a simple dress in color, texture and design, I think you can get away with a textured tight to compensate so the look isn't quite so boring. I think these tights are fun, not full on black which would have been okay but a little dull. I'll be using more black in the outfit later and I actually like how it comes together.
About the Benjamins in Goldenrod, $119.99 |
Yes, I'm quite aware that to the regular eye these are nothing to sing home about. But there's something so basic about this sorta-oxford heel that I desperately wanted to find an outfit for it. It actually wasn't until I discovered my love for vintage fashion that I even considered booties with a dress; before that I would have paired nearly every other kind of shoe but a bootie with the dress. Upon finding these types of clothes though, I have found more than a few dresses that honestly will look terrible unless the shoe is similar to this. Very simple goldenmustard (new word alert) oxford style heel, simple brown laces (which can be switched for black) with a practical and slightly fatter heel. So those of you who wear heels or boots on the normal should get by just fine for a casual day out in these.
Nicole Miller, $111.99 from Bluefly |
I chose this Nicole Miller double-breasted peacoat because its still cold enough to wear it but its not an overwhelming sort of garment, either. I like peacoats in general, though, and I think they display the feminine silhouette well. I think for a simple dress like the one above, it needs a complementary jacket, one that doesn't take away from the dress. That was one thing I loved about vintage outerwear; it still allowed you to retain a ladylike shape and not leave you looking like a curveless lump simply because of the cold. It's also the perfect length to display the dress without sacrificing warmth. Win win.
Same State Vintage, $10.00 on Etsy |
Finally, I chose these mustard gloves as the final piece to the outfit. I think they're simple, not too heavy, very vintage-inspired and match the color palette--I think they're a couple of shades lighter than the rest of our goldenmustard ensemble. Which is fine, not every piece of the outfit has to be spot on.
As for accessories, you can go with a choker type of pearl necklace, or even a longer string of pearl necklaces. A thin black belt could also go with this dress; its a simple addition to a very understated garment. A beret or other simple cap would also complement this ensemble very nicely. I wasn't looking at price for this one so altogether the outfit is rather pricey ($335.96 to be exact--yikes!) I'm sure it won't be hard to find a few fakeouts if you'd like to replicate it.
